BACKGROUND
In the spring of 2022, I studied plein air painting in the south of France. I had never painted outdoors before, and it truly opened my eyes. Painting in the same place as my subjects allowed me to pay attention to how I felt in my surroundings and connect with myself in my art. I grew more intentional with my brushstrokes, and thus, more aware of my experience.
I studied a different way of seeing nature, building my palette with nature’s colors, breaking down the different pigments of nature and piecing it back together through art. Painting at a site for a long period of time means one is intentionally observing their surroundings. I wanted to guide this experience with this app to allow people to be more intentional with what they see.
PROBLEM
The field of outdoor painting is isolating and inaccessible for starting artists.
The value that comes from creating from live observation is immense when it comes to improving observational skills. Not to mention the inherent connection to nature that is built, plein air painting offers a different way of seeing nature.
